The dominant religious beliefs during that time were Taoism and Buddhism. Taoists believed if you look at life and think about things in the right way, you will be much happier. Some people spent their whole life based on Buddha's teachings, which shaped the way Chinese people think.
Some of the valleys and places believed in White Lotus and Islam. White Lotus was a secret folk religious organization. The government adopted the prohibited policy to prevent rebellions. Islam was combined with the ideology of Confucianism and it had existed since the early 7th century during the Tang Dynasty. Zheng He was Muslim and The Hongwu Emperor also employed Muslim commanders in his army during the Ming Dynasty.
In the late Ming Dynasty, Christianity was also gradually spreading in China. Christianity arrived along with the Jesuit missionaries. They were able to convinced the Chinese members of the upper class to join with him through the advanced Western technology.
